Summary
In chapters 1 to 3, the plot and the characters are introduced. Marie is a 13 year old girl who lives in a village in Africa. The village must be undeveloped because the buildings are constructed out of tins and cinderblocks. She attends a local school with Mr.Alazzar as her instructor. Mr. Alazzar is a very sexist and suspicious person to Marie. In school, Marie tends to mix in with the boys rather than girls; Maybe that is beacuse there are barely any girls in the school. Joseph, a boy who lives next door, is Marie's best friend and Marie often times race Joseph or play jokes with him.
However, in this yet-so peacefull village, a rebel group strikes. Marie's family was marked as one of the targets. Marie's family evits this danger miraculously, but has letters "PLA" carved in the front door. After this happening, unusual events occur in Marie's society. Mr.Alazzar suddenly disappears out of town and her friends plan to flee the village.
Champion of Justice
Woo Yea Hwang is the person I think is a true champion of justice. This name might not sound familiar to most people but he is actually a memeber of the South Korean National assembly. He also serves as the chairman of the National Assembly Human Rights Forum as well, making him reknowned as one of the leading human rights advocates in South Korea.
Hwang pays special care to orphans, the handicapped, religious freedom, and the treatment of refugees from the North Korea. I personally adimre his care in treating the refugees from the North Korea because he even introduced a new legislation that would reform the policy of North Korean refugees. This new law protects the North Korean refugees and provides education for them until they become self sufficient enough to live their lives.
